There’s Demons in Them There Hills: Local Production Company Releases First Horror Flick
“The 8th Plague” Premiers at Old Town Theater in Alexandria—A Dream Come True for Two Local ArtistsMost people would agree that the suburbs of Washington, DC are not an ideal location for launching a film production company. However, director Franklin Guerrero of Prince William County and writer Eric Williford of Fairfax County were determined to do just that. Both had lifelong dreams of making movies, and were ready to do whatever it took to succeed, even if it meant eating Ramen Noodles and oatmeal every day for the rest of their lives.
The plan was simple: Total commitment. Guerrero quit his job, took out a second mortgage on his condominium. Meanwhile, to make time for writing, Williford chose to live with his parents and eschewed full-time employment in favor of the flexibility of “promotional marketing.” You know the guy on the corner hawking samples of the latest sports drink? That’s Williford.
Together the two, now incorporated as “Two For Flinching Productions,” scraped together a budget just under $70,000 and developed a story following the basic structure of early 80’s Italian horror films, Guerrero’s favorite sub-genre growing up. Then came the real challenge: making a good horror film for under $70,000.
In preparation, the duo watched countless ultra-low budget films of the same ilk, with the goal of learning what NOT to do. Williford and Guerrero realized that they possessed one crucial element that many lacked: a true love of the genre. Unlike many other horror filmmakers, Guerrero and Williford were not out to make a quick-buck in an “easy” genre, but rather to produce something that paid homage to a style of film making that they loved, and to create something they themselves would want to watch.
The result is “The 8th Plague,” the story of a young woman investigating her sister’s mysterious disappearance during a camping trip to the obscure mountain town of Halycon Ridge. In true horror film form, before she finds her sister the woman will encounter ancient evil, crazed locals and a plague ready to reclaim the human race—and learn to become quite handy with an axe.
The film will run at Old Town Theater in Alexandria, nightly at 9:30 pm from September 3 to September 16. Tickets are $9.00. On October 10, Anthem Video will issue a DVD release of “The 8th Plague,” bringing it to local video stores and delivery services such as Netflix.
